Bolzano, Italy
Bolzano is the capital of the South Tyrol, the German speaking region in the northern part of Italy. Alongside Innsbruck Bolzano is officially the capital of the Alps, but aside from the skiing, what is there to do here?
What's in Bolzano?
Bolzano is famous for Otzi the Iceman who is exhibited in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. He is exhibited along with his clothing and equipment.There are countless other museums to see here including the Museum for Natural History which was formally the administrative office for Emperor Maximillian 1st.
Theres also castles galore here to see, in fact there are 400 in the province in total! But if you just like wandering around you will find beautiful mediaeval streets here, with squares, piazzas and amazing buildings including the Casa della Pesa which dates back to 1634.
Accessing the Slopes
Bolzano is often referred to as the gateway to the Dolomites. In fact you can get to Val Gardena within about 1 hour as well as the great resorts of Selva Gardena and Val Senales. As it sits in the heart of the Dolomites it's a great place to base yourself for skiing.
Flights
Direct flights are available from London hHathrow to Bolzano with Alitalia. This is the south Tyrols only airport and is situated on the southern outskirts of Bolzano. Nearby airports, for a greater variety of flights, are Innsbruck to the north and Verona in the south.
Roads
It is possible to drive to ski resorts here, we have listed those that are only a 1 hour drive away and in addition there are a number that are 1.5 hours drive away. You can easily get into Austria from here.
