Chambery, France
Chambery, once the capital of Savoie, is located in the heart of the French Alps, about 50km north of Grenoble, hence its great location for skiers and boarders. But what of the city itself, is it just a great transport hub or worth checking out in its own right?
What's in Chambery?
Chambery is a bustling little place full of cafes, bars and restaurants, it certainly seems to have benefited form its recent boom in visitors. Some of its lively feel is due to the large numbers of students based here, about 11,000 at the last count!
If you want to do some sightseeing then check out Chambery castle which used to be home to the Holy Shroud(later moved to Turin where it was renamed the Turin Shroud). You also have the gothic 13th century cathedral and a number of really good museums including some art galleries housing some fine examples of Italian Renaissance artists.
Accessing the Alps
But once you've had enough of all the culture and great cuisine that Chambery has to offer you will be ready to hit those slopes, but what is the best way to travel?
Flights
You can fly to Chambery from many destinations in the UK. These include Birmingham, London, Leeds, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Southampton and Exeter. Airlines that fly to Chambery include British Airways, Flybe and jet2. The airport has really been developed primarily for the ski industry and therefore you will find flights more plentiful in the winter than the summer.
Roads
Chambery airport is located just off the A41 Autoroute Exit 13 . It is easy to hire a car from the airport with all the major car hire companies being based here. All of the driving time to resorts are listed above but to highlight some of the closest, La Clusaz will take you around one hour, Meribel 1 hour 20 and les Arcs 1 hour 54 minutes.
Trains
Public transport links aren't brilliant from Chambery. As it's so close to the resorts we would recommend that you either hire a car or look at ski transfer providers. A number of private transfer companies operate from Chambery so if you don't want to drive we would recommend this route.
