Where

Located in East Tyrol, ski Matrei near the small town of Hohe Tauern and set against the backdrop of the Hohe Tauern National Park this ski resort has some of the best scenery out of all the ski resorts in Austria. Reached by train into Lienz with a 40km taxi ride to the resort or by flying into Klagenfurt or Innsbruck airports with an approximate 160-170km ski transfer.

On the slopes

Ski Matrei in OstTirol and you get the best of two mountains, the Grobglockner and the Grobvenesiger which together offer 334km of pistes for all skill levels although intermediates will find the most trails available to them with 110km of pistes. However, there is a solid ski school, Bobo's Kinderland which is a separate children's ski school and warm-up area and extensive beginner's pistes to make the trip enjoyable for beginners as much as for experienced skiers and boarders.

For skilled boarders and skiers, there's 16km of black expert trails that present a formidable challenge. 15 lifts make it easy to navigate around the ski resort area and there's an excellent snow park that snowboarders enjoy on the top station "Happeck" as well as a half pipe to complete a snowboarder's holiday paradise. Additionally, there are many cross country trails for those who want to take in the breathtaking scenery as well as a 12km Cima Ross descent down into the resort at the end of the day.

Off the slopes

Off the slopes there are plenty of activities in Matrei in OstTirol to keep the entire family busy including alternative outdoor activities such as guided hiking tours for exploring the valley, snowshoeing, tobogganing, and ice skating. The après ski activities are quieter than in other holiday locations which is one reason why families enjoy ski holidays here.

Most people head to the local bars and pubs with the BB-Bar a popular pick for those who want cocktails and live music. The local cultural shops provide plenty of cultural specialties for tourists to enjoy as well as the restaurants which serve up the flavour of the hospitable country and traditional food choices.
