Is Italy a Great Place for a Ski Holiday?
Many Brits still head to France for their annual ski holiday but we think Italy really shouldn't be overlooked. Why? Well it brings many advantages. Firstly you can ski or board across borders. There are plentiful examples of this. Stay in Claviere for example and you can ski across to Montgenevre. Stay in La Thuile and you can access La Rosiere and finally stay in Cervinia and ski Zermatt for probably half the cost of staying in Zermatt. Fly into Turin and in about one hour you can be in Sauze d'Oulx. Also, take into account the breathtaking beauty and huge ski areas and you can see why we think Italy is a great place to go. Theres also the food and if you are skiing with children this tends to be a very family friendly place to visit.
Which Italian Airport is Best?
There are a number of airports that are good for ski resorts including Turin, Milan, Verona and Venice Treviso. The airport that we would home in on in particular is Turin as it is so close to some of Italys leading ski resorts. This was the venue for the 2006 Olympics and close to here you will find Sauze d'Oulx, Courmayeur, the Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio and finally Cortina. Turin has good motorway links, it is popular with low cost airlines and you can get trains straight to many resorts.
Milan Malpensa is only about one and a half hours away from the Aosta Valley ski area so Breuil Cervinia and Courmayeur are all within easy reach. You can also get further afield in about 2.5 to 3 hours from Milan to resorts like Sestriere, La Thuile and even Saas Fee is Switzerland in the Saastal ski area.
