Stubai Glacier

The Stubai Glacier is Austrias highest glacier ski area and allows for skiing and boarding from October usually through to June, so if you fancy some summer skiing or boarding this could be the place to go!

Where?

Situated at the head of the Stubai Valley, the Stubai Glacier is the largest ski area in the Innsbruck area.It is only 16km south of Innsbruck. The Stubai Glacier is located in Neustift. Innsbruck is the nearest international airport. Visitors here normally stay down in the valley at Neustift itself.

It can get seriously cold here as there is little or no cover provided by trees and you are right at the top of the mountain.
You will have to stay in a local village for accommodation or stay in Innsbruck and commute!

On the slopes

A lot of the pistes here are aimed at beginners and intermediates but there are some great off piste opportunities for experts .Winter 2012/13 will see two new lifts added to the area, the 8 seater Rotadl and the 4 seater chairlift Daunjoch and a new black slope the Daunhill. Highlights in this area include the longest run, the Wilde Grub'n, or Valley Run a 10km ski route that goes from the valley station of the Daunferner to the parking lot at the valley station at Mutterberg. Another run worthy of mention is the Fernauferner run where you get wonderful views of the Stubai Valley. Also worth noting that it can get seriously cold here as there is little or no cover provided by trees.This is a great choice for families with a good childrens learning area and pistes which are generally wide and good for intermediates.

Off the slopes

Well there is a car park, no seriously that's all there is here! For accommodation you will need to stay at a local village or stay in Innsbruck and commute by car every day. A lot of skiers and boarders who come here tend to stay in Neustift. Due to its proximity to Innsbruck you have a good choice of accommodation here as well as a good choice of restaurants, pubs and discos. In addition to the skiing and boarding theres a fitness centre, indoor tennis, bowling and a swimming pool in the area. Overall a great choice for a family ski holiday.
