Les Carroz is a great resort in the Grand Massif ski area. Be introduced to a small, traditional village in the heart of the Alps that caters specifically for families. With some great skiing and snowboarding here in the French Alps, read our review.
Where?
If you want to ski Les Carroz, did you know that it's connected to the nearby purpose-built ski resort of Flaine? (the more family friendly one) with plenty of shops and restaurants for you to enjoy post skiing. Geneva & Chambéry airports are very close by for easy ski transfers. Prices are reasonable here, and with excellent beginner terrain and a good ski school, kids will love it.
On the Slopes
Ski Les Carroz and you'll probably be blessed with consistently good snow conditions and will probably also enjoy early and late snow for skiing and boarding. Intermediates will enjoy the whole area, particularly the runs down to Les Carroz ski resort itself. For beginners there are some long green runs in the Flaine bowl, and lots of gentle blues. Experts should explore the crevasses of the Flaine bowl, the narrow moguls of the Diamant Noir, or the ominous 45-degree slopes of the Styx Piste! Boarders will find a big terrain park in Aujon, Flaine, and another in Samoens.
Ski Area
If you ski Les Carroz you are also in the ski region of Grand Massif.
Off the Slopes
A traditional village surrounded by wooded slopes, this is a relaxed, family-friendly place. Though the après-ski isn't spectacular, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, and three clubs for the late night crowd. Prices are reasonable, and you'll find a variety of choices for eating out to suit all tastes. Away from the slopes, other activities include tobogganing, floodlit skiing, hot air ballooning and a cinema.
Who's it Best For?
This resort is great for families as it has a short transfer time and great beginner and intermediate slopes. For mixed groups however you do have the Grand Massif ski area and some good off piste.

Les Carroz has a good selection of chalets to suit everyone. Alongside private chalet owners you will find a number of catered chalet operators here including Skiology and Ski Fusion. This is a very pretty resort. It has retained its old village alpine charm, so this really is the place to come if you are looking for the traditional alpine look and feel, without having to pay through the nose for it.
Where Should I Stay in Les Carroz?
You will find a good selection of chalets throughout the resort. There are especially a large number of catered chalets here and the providers tend to be the smaller chalet operaotors. Also check out some of the chalet apartments which are often in beautiful locations and offer some great facilities. The Pierre & Vacances Premium les Fermes de Soleil for example offer apartments in a chalet style set up complete with pool, jacuzzi and gym.
For ski in ski out check out the Chalet Deux Freres which has 5 bedrooms and is really beautifully decorated. Also, do look at the chalet style hotels which are often great value. One to check out is Chalet Hotel Les Airelles which has 12 rooms and is only a few minutes walk from the village centre.
CHALETS
Apartments can be a great choice on a ski holiday and they have certainly changed from the concrete monstrosities of the 1960's. Now they are often very stylish affairs with facilities that would rival any good hotel inlcuding swimming pools, fitness centres, saunas and spas. So don't discount apartments without looking first to see what is available.
There are a number of apartment complexes to choose from in Les Carroz. For self catering apartments check out the provider Snowbeds. For something a little more special check out Pierre & Vacances Premium Les Fermes de Soleil. The apartments here are built in the traditional Savoyard style and the facilities are impressive including a swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym and even a skating rink. The lifts are 800m away with a free shuttle bus to get you there.
Are Apartments Really Such a Good Idea?
We think apartments really are worth checking out, particularly in resorts that have had recent investment. The apartments now being built offer great value for money when compared to chalets and even offer better facilities. Apartments can also come as catered options and the floor space in some can also match that of any chalet.
Apartments can work out slightly cheaper than chalets and for families and large groups they can be a great idea. If you book in the same apartment complex you get to be together but also retain some space and independence from each other. This way you may still be speaking to each other by the end of the holiday!
A hotel can be a good choice on a ski holiday. If you are half board you have no worries about where to eat in the evening and many hotels come with great facilities for skiers including swimming pools and spas. For families, a hotel family suite can be very cost effective and some hotels will also offer childrens entertainment and even baby sitting services.
There aren't a huge number of hotels in Les Carroz but dont let that put you off. There are no luxury 5* hotels here but you can find some lovely gems. The majority of the accommodation tends to be in catered chalets but if it is a hotel you are looking for we can advise you on where to look.
Where to Look for a Hotel in Les Carroz
If you are on a tight budget then check out the Hotel La Croix de la Savoie. the low price does come with a downside though-you will need to walk about 15 minutes to get to the village centre and the pistes. There is a bus you can get but for some this may be too far ecah day. If you want a little more comfort then do look at La Bergerie which is more central in location and very beautifully decorated.
If food is what really matters to you then check out Les Servages d'Armelle. It may be small with only 8 bedrooms but it has a 4* rating and offers prestige suites with private spa and steam rooms. The interior is lovely, you have direct access to the slopes and it has a Mitchelin starred restaurant, so well worth looking at!
One of the great things about Les Carroz is that it is so close to Geneva. It is less than an hour away, so Geneva is a good choice of airport. Lyon and Chambery airports are approximately 2 1/2 hours away. You can take the train instead but be warned you will need to change a few times. By traint you would need to get the TGV from Paris to Cluses. From Cluses you would then have a 20 minute taxi journey.
Getting from Geneva Airport to Les Carroz
One of the most cost effective ways if you dont need a car in the resort is to pre book a private minibus. Many operators offer buses that seat up to 8 people, most are 4x4. Prices are approximately 30 Euros per person per single trip. If you are not in a group of 8 you could opt for a 'shared transfer' where you share with people also going to Les Carroz. Go Massif are a well known private minibus company operating in this resort.
There is a public bus that goes from Geneva to Les Carroz, the coach company is called SAT. Costs are about 30 Euros per person per single trip but the journey takes about 1.5 hours compared to a minibus which would be quicker. You can of course always get a private taxi, this would cost more at 140 Euros but if there are enough of you sharing than the price is more reasonable.
There are plenty of car hire companies at Geneva Airport. Our advice would be to double check that you have a parking space at your chosen accommodation and also always book from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport. If you hire from the French side there is an additional French road tax charge of 30 Euros.
Les Carroz ski schools provide you with access to professional ski and snowboard instructors for private, group and children's ski lessons. So this winter, why don't you book before you leave home and ensure that you have places all organised for your ski break.
