Sauze d'Oulx ski resort will place you in the midst of Italy's Vialettea ski domain, which includes Claviere, Italy's oldest ski resort, and Sestriere, home of the 1997 World Championships. As part of the 78-lift Milky Way/Vialattea, you'll find over 400km of slopes at your disposal, and with Turin only an hour away, access is easy.

Extensive and uncrowded slopes with some amazing tree-lined reds and blues. Very good value.
Linked into the Milky Way network opening up the pistes of Sansicario, Sestriere and Montgenevre. Only a 1 hour transfer from Turin airport.
Entertaining nightlife which can be as much or as little as you want.

WE DON'T LIKE

Not the best resort if you have young children, no creche on offer here and children have to be 5 to start ski school.
A very popular resort at peak holiday times and at weekends. Some of the lifts are also looking a bit tired now.
Few good hotels or rental chalets available.

On the Slopes

The 300 km of groomed runs available on ski holidays in Sauze d'Oulx mean that some of the best skiing in the Alps and Dolomites is found here. It is ideal for intermediate skiers, who will find that 69 per cent of the slopes are graded for them, while 21 per cent of the runs are rated for beginners, and only 10 per cent advanced. Boarders will enjoy both the piste and the snowboard park.

In Sauze d'Oulx, a busy village combines traditional 16th century Italian architecture, sunny weather, and great party facilities, everything you need for a great winter holiday is here. Traffic can sometimes be a problem, but you'll find the town is overflowing with reasonably priced restaurants and pizzerias offering food for all tastes and budgets. Après ski is vibrant, with plenty of pubs, clubs, and smart cocktail bars open until the early hours. Popular spots include Crowded House, Paddy's or the Derby Bar.

Sauze d'Oulx has reinvented itself in some ways since the 1980's as it was known as something of a party town that didn't really attract anyone over the age of 30! Now it does attract all age groups, the only real downside is that the lifts and infrastructure could do with more investment.

Chalets are for many a great option for a ski holiday. Great to socialise with friends in and if you can get a catered option all your needs can be met. Chalets really do come in all shapes and sizes and also location, with some situated slope side to those in the centre of the resort.

In Sauze d'Oulx the one thing you wont find much of is catered chalets. In Italy the catered chalet concept hasn't really developed as much as it has in say France. You will find chalets in the resort but if its catered accommodation you were looking for you may do better to check out the hotels.

Where to Stay Here

Sauze d'Oulx may be a small resort but what often surprises people is that it is very spread out so you can get it wrong when booking accommodation. Put simply the lifts are at one end of town and if you book accommodation at the other end you could have a long walk every morning.

There are chalets located on the outskirts of the resort as well as near to the lifts. The old town is also a very beautiful part of the resort with cobbled streets, wine bars and good shops. There are some good B&B's here that are worth looking at.

CHALETS

Apartments have become more popular in recent years and are very different from what they used to be. Far from the concrete jungles of the past modern apartments are now light and airy and are often architecturally designed. In addition many now have amazing facilities that include swimming pools and wellness centres.

In Sauze d'Oulx there is a good range of accommodation including chalets, hotels and apartments. The one thing that is somewhat lacking is the catered chalet set up, in Italy this has never really taken off in the same way as it has in France. If this is your bag you may want to check out the hotels instead.

When booking accommodation in Sauze d'Oulx do be careful that whilst the resort is fairly small it is a little sprawling. The lifts are one end of the resort and some of the accommodation is at the other so unless you don't want a long walk in the morning do check out location very carefully.

Are Apartments Really Such a Good Idea?

Well they will work out cheaper than many hotels and chalets.In addition, the facilities in modern apartments can be very good. They can also be a great idea for families travelling together and large ski groups. You may get more independence and space than in one large chalet.

There is a good range of accommodation on offer in Sauze d'Oulx from chalets to apartments and hotels. The vast majority of the accommodation is hotels and apartments, the one thing really lacking is catered chalets as they have never really taken off in Italy as they have in say France.

If you were looking for a catered chalet you would do better to check out the hotels available. When booking your accommodation here do be careful, the resort is small but it is sprawling with lifts one end of the resort and a lot of accommodation the other end. So unless you don't want a long walk in the morning check carefully.

What Type of Hotels are Available in Sauze d'Oulx?

There are some good 2* and 3* hotels available including the Orso Bianco and the Stella Alpina which is just 100m from the slopes. If you want a bit more luxury check out the 4* Grand Hotel la Torre. Another comfortable hotel is Hotel Besson which has a good wine bar.

There are also some good B&B's in Sauze d'Oulx, many of which are in the old town which has old cobbled stones, wine bars and lovely shops. Such B&B's include Chalet Faure and Grand Trun.

There are a number of different airports to choose from to get to Sauze d'Oulx. The nearest airport is Turin which is 90km east of Sauze d'Oulz. Airlines that travel here from the UK include British Airways and FlyThomasCook. Other airports to consider are Chambery which is 2 hours away, Milan is 2.5 hours away and finally Grenoble is about 2 hours 40 minutes away.

Travelling from Turin

One of the simplest ways to get to Sauze from Turin is to hire a private minibus, this can often work out very cost effective if there is a group of you. Prices are typically around 30 Euros per person. If you are not in a large group then opt for the 'shared service' where you effectively share the taxi with other people travelling to the resort.

You can take a bus from the airport in Turin to the train station. Tickets cost about 5 Euros and the journey is around 30 minutes. From the train station you can catch a train to Oulz which costs 15 Euros with a journey time of 90 minutes. A bus can then take you on to the resort which will cost 5 Euros and take an additional 15 minutes. The journey by bus and train is therefore possible but if you have lots of luggage and children you will need to accept that you will need to make a number of changes.

You could also decide to drive all the way. From most of the ferry ports that serve the UK the driving time would work out around 10 hours. Likewise you could take the train all the way. From London you would take the Eurostar from St Pancras, change to Gare de Lyon where you can catch a train direct to Oulx.
