Vaujany FR

Read our resort guide to Vaujany and see why it has become so popular with so many Brits. It combines the charms of a sleepy village with access to a huge ski area in Les Grandes Rousses. Great conditions for skiing and snowboarding and pistes for all levels and abilities - this is also becoming a good ski weekend destination.

When you ski Vaujany, you can marvel in the fact that this ski resort is only possible thanks to a 1980s hydro-electric scheme. The villagers received a vast sum of money, which they invested in a state-of-the art 160-person cable car to link them to one of France's biggest ski areas, Alpe d'Huez. Which means there's access to 273 pistes covering 225km. Access is good from airports and on roads and there's 5 airports within 2 hours with Grenoble and Chambéry being the closest.

LONGEST RUN : 8.0 km
SEASON : December - April

  • Good selection of runs - probably best suited for beginners and intermediates.
  • Part of the massive Alpe d'Huez ski area, linked by big modern lift system. Authentic alpine village with above average sunshine.
  • Great for family holidays with lots of pistes and children's activites.

  • Close to home advanced and expert skiers and boarders will be frustrated. Nursery slopes nightmare for beginner boarders due to long drag lift.
  • Getting busier by the year - too many good things said about the resort. Very few shops in the resort.
  • Nightlife and aprés-ski is low key - this is not a big party resort.

Chalets are  a great option on a ski holiday. Many come catered so you have all the luxury of being cooked for in your own home. Chalets can also be ski in ski out or conveniently situated in the centre of town. Many will sleep a huge party of 20+ skiers whilst others are more basic 1 bedroom affairs.

Vaujany is dominated by apartments and chalets so you will have a good choice. Many of the chalets are also catered and some are situated in the small neighbouring hamlet of La Villette, 1 km away.

Where Should I Look For a Ski Chalet in Vaujany?

Many chalets in Vaujany are ski in ski out and are situated well into the centre of Vaujany so that all the amenities are very accessible. It is also possible to find real 5* luxury chalets here. One of the most famous chalets is Chalet Saskia run by Ski Peak. The chalet was built in 2000 and sits on a sunny plateau, it has 10 ensuite bedrooms but has been cleverly designed so it can be spilt into two chalets or 1 for bigger groups.

In addition you will find 4* and 3* chalets in both Vaujany and La Villette. La Villette is about  a 3 minute drive to the main lift in Vaujany so is worth looking at. Ski Peak have a good choice of chalets throughout the resort so do check them out.

Apartments can be a great idea on a ski holiday. They can work out cheaper than a chalet yet still come catered and offer great facilities that match any hotel. For example a lot of the newer apartments come complete with swimming pool, saunas and spas.

Vaujany is a resort of chalets and apartments so you will have a good choice of accommodation here. Many of the apartments are of the newer style and are spacious and luxurious. An example of this is the residence La Perle de l'Osians, these apartments are really spacious and close to the slopes.

Other apartments worth looking at are La Cascade de Vaujany and if you are on a tight budget look out Residence Maeva les Portes de l'Osians. These apartments sit at the back of the village about 400m from the ski lift. They do offer great views and are close to all amenities.

Are Apartments Really Such a Good Idea?

Many skiers still see apartments as something of a poor relation to chalets and that may be due to the concrete monstrosities that were built in the 1960's. But apartments now tend to be well designed and with great amenities that are often better than a chalet. They also often also work out cheaper than a chalet so don't discount them!
