Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg is Austrias fourth largest city and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. From the list above you can see it's good as a starting off point for your ski holiday, but is it worth checking out as an entity in its own right?
What's in Salzburg?
The answer to the above is an emphatic yes! Salzburg is an amazing city with a huge amount to do so if you can afford it, try and spend some time here. This is the birthplace of Mozart and you can still visit the house he grew up in and look at his instruments in the Mozart museum. Then there is the Hohensalzburg Fortress built in 1077 and the largest fully preserved fortress in central Europe.
Salzburg is a lovely city to wander around, in 1997 it was designated a world heriatge site by UNESCO and is full of buildings that date back to the Middle Ages. In fact most architectural periods are here with buildings from Romanesque, Baroque and Renaissance periods. Most of the old city is fairly small so it is quite easy to spend your days happily wandering here.
Accessing the Alps
You could easily just holiday in Salzburg alone as there is so much to do here! But if it's really the skiing and boarding that you are interested in then check out the best way to hit those slopes
Flights
Salzburg airport also called Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart airport and is the second largest airport in Austria, located only 4 km from Salzburg itself. You can fly direct from the following UK airports-London Stansted and London Gatwick. From London Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham you will normally have one stop. The flight time from London to Salzburg is around 2 hours.
Airlines that fly direct to Salzburg include Ryanair and British Airways. Airlines with one stop include Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss Airlines.
Road
Located close to the eastern Alps Salzburg airport really is a gateway to Austrias numerous ski resorts. Germany can also be reached in half an hour and Switzerland within an hour opening up both countries ski resorts. For Austrian ski resorts either hire a car yourself or use one of the many ski transfer companies that operate out of Salzburg airport. Many resorts can be reached within 1 hour making ski weekends very realistic.
Trains
Salzburg train station is only minutes from the airport and can get you to many ski resorts within an hour or two, so public transport is a very real option. Thats said many find that travelling with children and ski equipment can be a pain on trains so it really is down to personal choice. For example it will take you only about 3 hours to get to Soll but that will invlove various buses and a train.
