Friedrichshafen, Germany
Friedrichshafen is the southernmost airport in Germany and is very close to the northern alps. In fact you can drive to Austria within half an hour and Switzerland within one hour. But is there more to Friedrichshafen than the airport?
What's in Friedrichshafen?
Friedrichshafen sits on the northern shores of Lake Constance and is often referred to as the 'town on the lake'. It offers amazing views of the mountains of Austria and Switzerland. But Friedrichshafen is really famous for the 'flying cigars', the zeppelin!
Friedrichshafen is the place the zeppelin was built and is once again being built here. The zeppelin museum houses the worlds largest collection of airships. The main attraction is the 33m long reconstruction of part of the LZ 129 Hindenburg. But this is also the town that is lovely to stroll around with cafes set alongside the lake with beautiful mountainous views. The lake itself offers up sailing and other watersport activities.
Accessing the Alps
As beautiful as Freidrichshafen is it is the skiing that you will be interested in, so how do you access the nearest slopes from here?
Flights
Friedrichshafen airport is located 6km from Friedrichshafen. It is a small regional airport but due to its location, where three countries share borders, you can access a good number of ski resorts. In 2 hours the Swiss resorts of Davos and Klosters can be all yours!
Train
It is possible to get to ski resorts by bus and or train. The train station is only minutes from the airport in Friedrichshafen and within 2 hours you could be in St Anton. The biggest downside of using public transport is that you often have to use a train and a bus and with ski equipment that can be a pain!
