A quiet pretty village set within the Montafon ski area. As it is at the end of the valley there is no through traffic and with the slopes of the valley beginning and ending right in front of the hotels in Gargellen you really can ski right back to your front door.

Where?

Gargellen is a traditional small Austrian mountain village situated in the heart of the Ratikon and Silvretta mountain ranges. It lies in a side valley of the Montafon in Austrias Vorarlberg region below the 2826m high Madrisahorn. The nearest airport is at Zurich and the nearest train station is at Schruns.

WE LIKE

Highest resort in the Montafon range, at the head of the valley so no through traffic and you can ski back to your front door
Good for beginners and intermediates with rolling wide pistes.
Uncrowded slopes and virtually no lift queues

WE DON'T LIKE

Little here for really expert skiers or boarders. You will need to head off piste if you want more challenge.
Apres ski is very quiet, really based on eating out at restaurants or hotels.

On the slopes

Gargellen is really good for beginners and intermediates. Most of the skiing is above the tree line and offers excellent cruisy blue runs. From the top of the gondola at Schafberghusli there are a couple of really good blue runs with superb views of the surrounding area. More advanced skiers or boarders may be better to head off piste, ski touring is very popular in Gargellen so this could also be an option with the possibility of a day trip into Switzerland.This is a good resort for families with a fun park at the Schafberghusli and a general relaxed atmosphere in the resort itself.

Off the slopes

Gargellen is a quiet Austrian village, this is not a mass tourism ski resort but a place to really get away from it all. This is not the resort for you therefore if you are looking for wild apres ski. There are some bars and restaurants, 14 in total but this is really a resort for families and people who want to feel they are skiing in a remote wilderness. Gargellen with its little baroque church has managed to maintain its original charm. There are no tower blocks, accommodation is in traditional style hotels, guest houses, inns and apartments. A great choice if you are an intermediate and you are looking for an uncommercialised ski resort.
