Sion, Switzerland
Sion is amazingly the oldest town in Switzerland and the capital of the Valais region. The area is a massive attraction for both winter and summer sports, but what of the town itself?
What's in Sion?
Sion is known as the most sun blessed town in Switzerland and alongside this the town literally oozes culture. If castles are your bag then you wont be disappointed here. There are four castles to visit, the earliest dating from the 11th century. Or, you can simply wander around the town and marvel at the Old Town itself with its beautiful buildings, museums and art galleries.
If wine interests you then Sion is located in the middle of one of the most important wine growing regions in Switzerland. So visit the vineyards and try Fendant, the regions best known white wine. Due to its good transport links Sion is a good place to explore what the Valais has to offer. But how do you get on the slopes?
Accessing the Alps
Unfortunately whilst Sion is in the perfect location for ski resorts you cannot currently get direct flights here from the UK. Snowjet, a subsidiary of the charter airline Titan, had previously had the only flights here from the UK but they do not currently run any. Your best bet is to fly to Geneva which is served daily by BA, Easyjet and Swiss air. Or if your budget allows it, Sion airport does take private jets!
Trains
There are direct connections by train into Sion from Basel, Bern, Geneva airport, Lausanne and Zurich airport every 30 minutes. The train journey from Geneva is 1 hour 45 minutes. In addition Sion has the largest bus station in Switzerland, with 23 destinations served from it.
Roads
The A9 motorway makes driving in this region pretty straightforward. You can either drive from Geneva, the ski resort of Nendaz for example will take you about 1 hour, 40 minutes drive. Or from Sion there are a number of car hire companies operating at the airport.
