Where?
Renowned for its scenery, why not ski Mürren and be with like-minded skiers and boarders that like a challenge? Advanced skiers visit for the black runs down from the Schilthorn and great off-piste at Blumental - less advanced skiers can still enjoy themselves by visiting the slopes at nearby Wengen and Grindelwald. The transfer from the airport is good - making for stress-free days.
On the Slopes
Because it's linked with Wengen and Grindelwald, Mürren provides for great ski holidays and all levels of skiers and boarders are catered for. Indeed, the Jungfrau region has a total of 200kms of pistes, 53kms of them at Mürren. The lifts are excellent, carrying up to 9,100 people per hour, and you really should visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant - it sits at 2970m, and is reputed to offer views of 200 mountains. Snowboarders will enjoy Murren's terrain park and half-pipe.

Ski chalets really are a great way to experience a ski holiday. You can opt for catered or uncatered and chalets either sit slopeside or they can be in the centre of the resort. They can also suit most budgets, if you have the money you can even opt for your own private chef!
Murren is a real gem of a resort, it feels very uncommercialised here compared to some better known Swiss resorts. So this could be a good choice for you if you want somewhere quieter and more undeveloped.
Where Should I Look for a Ski Chalet?
Accommodation here provides you with a good choice of chalets, apartments and hotels. This is a fairly compact village. You will find a good number of Swiss chalets here both catered and uncatered. The chalets are traditional wooden affairs with lovely shuttered windows and many offer the most amazing views.
Don't worry about booking a chalet in the centre of the village as it's traffic free and not known for wild apres ski. It's is also worth checking out some of the smaller hotels which are still family run offering exceptional service.
CHALETS
Ski apartments have got more popular over the years. Gone are the soulless concrete apartments that blighted many a French resort. New apartment buildings are now light, airy affairs which also offer amazing facilities.
Murren is a really lovely resort to stay in. It's quiet and car free so don't worry about getting an apartment in the centre of the village. This place is not known for wild apres ski.
There are a good choice of hotels, apartments and chalets in the resort. The architecture here is traditionally Swiss with wooden clad buildings and lovely wooden shutters. Families may want to check out the apartments in Hotel Edelweiss which are close to the nursery area, so great for children.
Are Apartments a Good Idea?
Apartments can work out much cheaper than chalets and hotels and in many cases offer really good facilities. If you are travelling with other families or in a large group and you don't want to be living on top of each other apartments can provide a really good solution.
Murren is a beautiful car free resort that offers a lovely range of accommodation that includes hotels, chalets and apartments. This resort is quiet and feels really undeveloped, a great choice if you want to feel you are getting away from it all.
The accommodation here is wooden clad buildings with lovely shutters, it all looks very idyllic. If you are looking for a hotel here then you will find hotels that range from 2* to 4* and with most of them still family owned you will get good food and service.
What Type of Hotels are Here?
As we have said this is not a glitzy resort full of 5* hotels but you will find low budget here alongside good quality 4*'s. One of the best 4* hotels is Hotel Eiger which is near the railway station. The views are great and it has a good sized swimming pool.
If you are on a real budget then check out Hotel Regina which sits between a hotel and a hostel. It's great value for money. Also check out the apartments in Hotel Edelweiss which are also good value for money particularly for families.
The nearest International airport to Murren is Zurich which is 2 hours 45 minutes away. Geneva is about 3 hours, 30 minutes away. Do remember that Murren is car free and as there is no road into Murren you will need to get a cable car from Lauterbrunnen, then a short electric train.
Transferring from Zurich
You could drive from Zurich but you will then need to leave the car at the multi storey behind the railway station at lauterbrunnen. The Murren BLM cable car departs from opposite the railway station in Lauterbrunnen, which takes you 700m higher up to Grutschalp. An electric train will then take you on a 15 minute journey from Grutschalp to Murren.
So driving is an option but as you cant use your car in the resort this could work out an expensive option. You may therefore want to look at hiring a private taxi from Zurich airport which could work out a cost effective option if you share the cost with others.
It is possible to do the journey by train but it does involve a lot of changes. You would need to take the train from Zurich to to Bern, change at Bern to Interlaken Ost then change again to get the train to Lauterbrunnen. The journeys are all very scenic but you will need to be prepared for lots of changes, which with ski equipment isn't that much fun!
