Bern, Switzerland
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, boasts its old town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in the heart of Europe and at the centre of Switzerland and as such is an easy place to reach whether you are travelling by train, car or plane.
What's in Bern?
Bern offers the visitor an amazing wealth of cultural activities and other leisure pursuits. Highlights include the quaint old town which is framed by the Aare river and offers the visitor great views of the Alps. Here you will find medieval buildings, a beautiful cathedral and Renaissance fountains. The clock tower dates back to 1530 and the cathedral is well worth a visit, it dates back to 1421.

Accessing the Slopes

Flights
Bern airport lies just 20 minutes from the city centre. It doesn't compare with Geneva or Zurich in terms of flight route network due to its restricted runway, but from the UK you can get direct flights with SkyWork Airlines from London City Airport and Flybe from London Gatwick, Manchester and Southampton.
Bern Airport itself doesn't have a station but there are regular bus links which will take you to Belp Station. From here you can travel on to Bern or head south towards Spiez.
Trains
Bern is located in the vast network of the Swiss Federal Railway between Geneva, Basel and Zurich and is served twice an hour by express trains from each of these cities. Hourly express trains take you to Interlaken, Brig and Lucerne, from where you can access great skiing.
By public transport you could reach Adelboden using bus and train in 2 hours, Wengen can be reached by train in about 2 and a half hours and Murren in two hours.
Roads
Hiring a car at Bern airport is easy and then the ski resorts really are very close to hand. Within just 1 hour you have the resorts of Adelboden, Kandersteg, Murren and Wengen and add another half an hour on and you could be in Gstaad, Villars and Leysin.
