Bergamo, Italy

Bergamo is a pretty town in Lombardy on the edge of the Alps. It's  a great gateway to skiing in Italy but is it just a gateway to ski resorts or worth visiting in its own right?

What's in Bergamo?

Bergamo is a really attractive city, structured on two levels, the lower city is quite modern, the upper city offers an amazing cultural and historical centre. This is a beautiful place to stroll around and enjoy the Italian coffee. But if time is tight, here are the top things we think you should do.The Piazza Vecchia is one such sight which some think is the most beautiful in Europe. The square is overlooked by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Campanone and the ancient town hall.

If art is your bag check out the Accademia Carrara which houses some of Italy's finest art from the 15th to the 18th century. For music lovers you may know that Gaetano Donizetti was born here. An opera festival is held here in his honour every year from September to December.If you want to combine some water sports with your skiing then head to Iseo and Endine Lakes, not far from Bergamo.

And finally, if you love your drinking water you would have heard of San Pellegrino. This famous thermal resort that the 3 water springs from is only 18km from Bergamo and well worth a visit.

Accessing the Ski Resorts

There are local ski resorts close to Bergamo-just 45km away you will find the main valleys of Brembana and Seriana which offer 300km of ski slopes. You can also access better known ski resorts in Italy and also those in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Courmayeur is about a 2.5 hour drive away, Sauze d'Oulx about 2.75 hours transfer and Sestriere nearly 3 hours away.

Flights

You can fly to Bergamo from a number of UK airports. From London there are flights from Stansted with low cost airline Ryanair, who also fly out of Manchester, Birmingham,Leeds and Bristol.

Roads

Bergamo airport(or Orio Al Serio)  is situated just outside Bergamo. Transfers are relatively easy. There are low cost coach companies-Terravision, Autostrada and the Orio Shuttle which will transfer you into Milan which takes about 60 minutes. Coaches leave every 30 minutes. If you choose to drive there are a number of car hire companies available. The larger ski areas of the Dolomites, and Alta Badia are all within a 3-4 hours drive.

Trains

There is a train station in Bergamo, located in the south eastern part of the city in an area called Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. There is no direct rail link from the airport but you can take a bus there from the airport to the station which takes about 15 minutes. The train journey then takes about 50 minutes from Bergamo to Milan. From Milan you have access to all the major cities in Italy.
