Milan, Italy

Milan was the Western Roman Empires capital for over a 100 years. It is Italys business capital, home to its stock exchange as well as its world famous fashion industry. But is there more to Milan than this?

What's in Milan?

There is certainly more to Milan than money and fashion. For example it is home to Leonardo da Vincis 'Last Supper' and don't forget Caravaggios 'Basket of Fruit' hangs in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. There's also great opera here, countless old churches and old streets full of architectural gems. But if fashion floats your boat check out the boutiques of D&G, Versace and Armani.

There's also the football as Milan is home to AC Milan and FC Internazionale. The downside to Milan is the traffic congestion and the pollution can be awful. But how good is Milan as a gateway to get you onto the slopes?

Accessing the Alps

Milan is  a very strategic location for skiing and snowboarding as it is located at the base of the alps. In fact on a clear day you can see the Alps. But how best to get there?

Flights

Milan has three airports but Malpensa is the main international airport. It is situated 45km northwest of Milan.  Direct flights here from the UK are relatively cheap so don't bother with any of the indirect ones. Good deals can be got from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. Airlines that fly here include British Airways, Flybe, Alitalia, easyJet, Ryanair and bmi regional.

Road

Milan is geographically a good gateway to some great ski resorts. You can hire  a car from the airport or use a private transfer company. Within 2 hours you could be in Champoluc or Valle di Susa. Within 3 hours you could be in the French resorts of Argentiere and Chamonix or the Italian resorts of Courmayeur and Claviere.

Train

There are some buses that will take you direct from the airport in Milan to ski resorts. For example there is a public bus that takes you from Milan Malpensa direct to Livigno. The Malpensa Express is a train that will take you into Milan in about half an hour. From there you can take trains and buses to a number of ski resorts.
