Klagenfurt, Austria
Located near the Slovenian border in Southern Austria lies Klagenfurt, the capital of the Austrian state of Carinthia. A useful starting point for skiers and boarders but is it worth a longer visit?
What's in Klagenfurt?
Probably Klagenfurts main attraction is the Lindwurm, a central monument built in the sixteenth century which resembles a dragon which was said to have haunted the area around Klagenfurt. There are also lovely old buildings to see including the Landhaus, a sixteenth century building and the baroque style Klagenfurt cathedral.
Nearby, there is also the Hochosterwitz, one of the most impressive medieval castles in all of Austria. So for those of you who enjoy old architecture this is a great place. In addition, just strolling around the old town with its cafes and restaurants can be a good idea before hitting those slopes.
Accessing the Alps
But as lovely as looking at an old building is we would argue that it will never be as great as looking at a slope with fresh snow on it. So, how best to access the white stuff from here?
Flights
Flight time from London to Klagenfurt is about 3 hours. The airlines that fly here are Austrian Airlines and German Wings. You can get flights from most cities in the UK including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol but many are not direct flights. For example flying from Manchester with German Wings involves a changeover at Hamburg airport.
But once at the airport how is the best way to access the slopes?
Road
Klagenfurt is located at the A2 motorway and hiring a car here and driving is relatively easy. Within 1 hour you could be in the Slovenian resorts of Bled, Kranjska Gora and Javornik or the Austrian resort of Gerlitzen.Alternatively you could pre book a private airport transfer.
Trains
There is a train station within 1 km from the airport where you can get trains to most major cities in Austria. So it is possible to get a train to a ski resort but you will need to change and with ski equipment that isn't always much fun. Our advise in Klagenfurt is to drive.
