World's Largest Ski Park Proposed in Denmark

Check out the plans for an amazing ski park in Denmark. It may not be your first choice of ski destination but that may all change if these proposals go ahead.

Imagine a ski resort encompassing more than a million square feet. Then include eight slopes of differing degrees of difficulty, some inside and some outside. You must imagine it because it doesn't exist – yet. If some innovative architects in Denmark have their way, their vision will eventually come to fruition in the city of Randers.

Although nothing is definite, the architectural firm, CEBRA, in cooperation with travel company Danski, is working on ambitious proposals for the massive ski resort in a quest to give Denmark the honor of hosting the largest indoor ski resort in the world. Currently, that distinction belongs to Ski Dubai, which opened in 2005 and takes up 240,000 square feet.

Ambitious plans by the architectural firm, CEBRA, call for the resort to be shaped like a giant six-point snowflake, with three arches spanning across the river Gudenaen as its crowning glory. Those arches will also serve to connect nearby neighborhoods and add to the city's existing infrastructure.

The actual slopes are based on the popular pistes of France's Alpe d'Huez ski resort. Architectural details allow the slopes to be altered on occasion so skiers can have unique experiences each time they visit.

Additional features include ski shops, a restaurant, a bar, and a hotel incorporated into the sleek, urban setting. In addition to skiing, visitors will enjoy a playground, a freestyle park, and other outdoor activities like BMX biking and skateboarding – and let's not forget the breathtaking views. Sounds like they thought of everything.

CEBRA's website says the beauty of the skidome is "that it can be used and enjoyed by everyone – any time of the day, any time of the year." That holds tremendous appeal for avid skiers, with the added benefit that their non-skiing companions won't have any trouble finding something to occupy their time.

Ambitious, imaginative, and already creating a buzz, the big sticking point for this project may prove to be funding, but it's not hard to imagine some big name corporate sponsors lining up for the action. Better watch your back, Ski Dubai.
