Skiing Piemonte Turin – Resorts and Ski Guide

The Piemonte area of Italy is a very popular one for winter sports and skiing in particular. Skiers of all abilities will be able to find a home for their skills in the region. With more than 50 ski resorts there are around 1300km of ski runs and plenty of facilities, including chair lifts, ski lifts and aerial tramways.
Piemonte Ski Resorts – Valle di Susa
Resorts include Valle di Susa where some slopes are illuminated for night skiing and there are plenty of off-trail routes for more experienced skiers, as well as beginners’ slopes.
Sestriere
Alternatively, there is Sestriere, the ski resort founded by the Agnelli family. With almost 150 runs to choose from, the resort offers night skiing and also has snow cannons for those days when there is very little natural snow.
Alagna
The ski resort of Alagna can be found at Valsesia; here you will have access to around 180km of ski runs including those of Monterosaski, which is considered to be one of the largest resorts in Europe. Skiers of all abilities will be happy there and the area has some of the best off-piste runs in the Alps. Other winter sports on offer include ski mountaineering and snowboarding.
Caldirola
The Caldirola ski resort dates back to the late 1920s and is one of the oldest in Italy. It can be found in the upper Val Curone area and is a great place for those interested in visiting a very traditional area. Skiers of all levels are welcome and it is a very beautiful region to visit.
Other Resorts
Just a short distance from Biella there are ski resorts where tourists can indulge in a more combined skiing holiday experience, with cultural attractions and opportunities for retail therapy on offer in addition to the skiing, snowboarding and après-ski activities. Alternatively visitors can consider the Lanzo and Canavese Valleys for a variety of winter sports including Nordic skiing and excursions onto the glacier as well as the chance to use snowshoes.
Cross Country Skiing
For cross-country skiing try Formazza or other areas such as Trasquera, Alpe Devero or Santa Maria Maggiore that are all found within easy reach of the Lakes Tourist District. This is also a great region in which to take up ski mountaineering. There are Alpine Club branches that offer courses for those who want to find out more and build on existing skills.
Essential Après-Ski
For après-ski there are the Valleys of Cuneo. The top quality restaurants and bars located there serve some of the finest cuisine in the region. This is in addition to the state of the art facilities for the actual skiing. Examples of the resorts here include the Po Valley, the Valle Gesso and the Valle Varaita, where there are facilities for skiers of all ages and abilities.

Getting to the airport:
BY CAR – Torino airport is 16km from the city centre, from which it is reachable by car in approximately 30 minutes using the ring road connected to the motorway network, connecting Caselle directly to the most important cities of Piemonte and the rest of Italy.
BY TRAIN – a railway line connects Caselle airport with Dora GTT Station in Torino (www.gtt.to.it). Departures every 30 minutes from 5.13 to 19.43 to the airport and from 6.49 to 21.19 to Torino. Journey time: 19 minutes.
BY BUS – the centre of Torino is easily reachable in 40 minutes using the SADEM bus service (www.sadem.it); SAVDA (www.savda.it) connects the airport with Valle d’Aosta in approx. 2 hours.
BY TAXI – the Taxi area is located at the exit of the arrivals terminal; in addition to the public service there is a personalised limousine/taxi service operational 24 hours. Approximate fare: 35 Euro.
