If you choose to ski in Saas-Fee this winter, then you'll enjoy this superb Swiss ski resort as countless families do every year. We have created a quick resort guide to Saas Fee to show you that 'The Pearl of the Alps' is an utterly charming Swiss ski resort that has it's own glacier as well as enough skiing and snowboarding to keep most beginners to intermediates busy. But it's not all about the skiing.
Where?
Located about 3 hours total transfer time from Geneva airport, Saas-Fee is nestled in the Saastal Valley in the Valais region of Switzerland. The simplest way to get here, as we discovered for this resort guide, is to jump on the train at Geneva airport direct to Visp, then jump on the waiting bus to Saas-Fee. Just 2 hours and 53 minutes later, we arrived and it's a cheap way to travel thanks to the "Swiss Rail Pass".
At the bottom of the Saas Glacier, ski holidays in Saas-Fee are all but guaranteed snow and many people choose this as their Easter ski break destination. Saas Fee lies beneath the snow covered peaks of Switzerland's highest mountain 'The Dom'. There are 32 pistes covering about 100km, so everyone will find something to enjoy, and access is good from either Sion or Geneva airports.
On the Slopes
Ski holidays in Saas-Fee come with almost guaranteed good snow - one of the benefits of the Saas Glacier and the high altitude. Although the runs aren't always steep, intermediates should find plenty to keep them busy for a week, with over 50kms of runs rated intermediate. Boarding is very popular here, with a large terrain park featuring a long half pipe as well as numerous kickers and rails. There's also a great boarder cross run to enjoy. There are also a range of local, national and international competitions held throughout the season, so grab a deckchair, a beer and watch the freestyle shows!
Ski Area
If you ski Saas-Fee you are in the Swiss ski region of Valais and in the Saastal Valley.
Off the Slopes
Saas-Fee has over 7,500 beds available in hotels, chalets and apartments right across this charming Swiss mountain village. Chalets and apartments range from the most basic through to 6* luxury penthouse apartments and chalets. There are also a lot of hotels again across all the price brackets, so the choice really is yours.
With pedestrianised streets (only small specially adapted electric vehicles allowed in resort) you'll find a good range of shops, restaurants and other facilities. There's a lively après ski scene without being rowdy, with bars, pubs and a couple of night clubs in the village. Your choice of restaurants is good with everything from traditional Swiss food through to popular international choices such as pizza.
Finally, you'll also find extensive hiking trails, mountaineering, snowshoeing, a sled run, curling, and outdoor ice-skating. There's also a good 25m swimming pool with accompanying children's pool right in the centre of town that has a "wellness suite" as well as some amazing views of the mountains.
Who's it Best For?
With our resort guide hat on, this is a superb ski resort for families and those wanting to experience Switzerland for the first time. It's also very reasonably priced - something you don't often hear about it's close world-famous neighbour just over the top of the mountains, Zermatt!

If you're planning on a visit to Switzerland, then why not look at ski chalets in Saas-Fee in the Saastal Valley? A superb family resort with all year skiing and boarding available, there are a range of ski chalets available to you both as self catered and catered.
Self catered chalets are easy to find here and whether it's the luxury end (6* self-catered chalets with hot tubs, wine cellars and views across the mountains) through to more basic chalets that serve as a base for you to rest your head only, you have a lot of choice.
Where do I Want the Ski Chalet?
The village of Saas-Fee itself is about 2km long, although the centre of town about 400m from the slopes. The far end of the village (Wildi) is served by a small electric train, so accessing ski chalets here and the slopes is easy provided you get the times right!
In the centre of Saas Fee there are a few bars and clubs, but this is not really a party town as such so noise is kept to a minimum. There are a lot of chalets and apartments just off the main road to the slopes.
Generally speaking apartments for a ski holiday can be cheaper and in some cases just as luxurious as ski chalets. The ski apartments in Saas-Fee are, in the most part, situated ideally for both the slopes and for the centre of town. There are also some that are up to 25 minutes walk from the town, but these bring their own charm.
Whether you are looking for a luxury ski apartment with widescreen TV's, large beds and Egyptian Linen, or a more basic apartment that happens to be close to the bars and restaurants, you can compare some great options below.
Why Choose an Apartment?
From cost to convenience there's a host of reasons why an apartment could suit you. Apartments in Saas-Fee are on the whole very well equipped, are located in the centre of the village and are affordable for what you get. There are some luxurious options if you need, but whether you are 4 people or a group of 10, there's apartments here.
There are some catered apartments in Saas-Fee but normally you will have to find a chef that you can book to come in and cook rather than having a 'live in' or on-site chef.
With such a wide range of hotels in Saas-Fee you can be assured that the accommodation you want at the price you can afford is somewhere in this picture-postcard Swiss village.
We can't hope to review all the venues for you but whether you choose the centre of Saas Fee or choose to go out to the Honeggau area or along the Am Vogelwald towards the Wildi area, all the ski hotels are well set up to look after you Swiss style!
What Types of Hotels Are Available?
Being a great destination for families and thanks to it's high altitude ski resort status, this ski resort attracts people to return year after year. As a result, you really do have a very wide range of hotels to choose from. From the luxury "Ferienart Resort & Spa" right in the middle of town through to the "Dom Hotel" on the square or the "Hotel Etoile" at the other end of the village (accessible on the electric train or a 15 minute walk), compare prices based on the type of catering options and the accommodation itself.
You can search for the right hotel below, or why not consider a chalet or apartment for a bit more privacy? Saas Fee is just one resort locally, with Saas Grund and Saas Almagell providing more skiing opportunities for you.
FEATURED HOTELS
When you arrive at your chosen airport (from Zurich to Geneva or if you are lucky Sion if you can find flights) then choosing the right airport transfers to Saas-Fee could save you literally hundreds of pounds. So how about the following quick tips for you :
By Train
The Swiss Rail system offers free travel for under 16's and also as part of a Visitors Rail Pass, you can buy a rail/coach ticket for as little as CHF127 (£78) per adult. You must buy these tickets before you arrive in Switzerland though.
We think this is the perfect route as the train skirts around Lake Geneva before arriving at Visp where there's a bus waiting for you for the final 45 minute journey into Saas-Fee. it really is pretty hassle free and very cheap for a family!
By Taxi or Car
From Geneva or Zurich, we wouldn't recommend it. It is quite a long haul and expensive. However, if you're planning in visiting Zermatt or other resorts during your stay, then it may well work out cheaper as internal rail and bus travel is quite expensive.
Book your Saas-Fee ski school lessons early to avoid disappointment this winter. From beginners through to advanced or off-piste, compare leading ski schools in this resort below to get a great deal on helping you to imrpove your technique.
