The Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is something of an anomaly.Located barely a stones throw from the Mediterranean coast it has great sunshine, great snow conditions and is still very reasonably priced compared to other resorts in Europe. Sierra Nevada literally means 'Snowy Mountain range' and it includes some of the highest peaks in Europe. The ski season is long running from November through to May.

This was the site of the 1996 ski world championships which saw a huge investment in infrastructure. There are now 45 pisted runs including 4 green, 18 blue, 18 red and 5 black although it has access to 79 pistes. The longest run is 6km. There are 29 lifts. Cross country skiing is well catered for and there is a freestyle park. This is a great resort for families.

Visiting the Sierra Nevada

For intermediate and advanced skiers it is great to be able to use the courses that were used in the 1996 world championships which certainly adds an air of excitement. In addition to the skiing this region offers artistic skiing, telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing., This region is also one of Spains pioneer areas for snowboarding. The main run for boarders is the Tubo de Borreguiles. and with the majority of lifts being chairs and gondolas this is a great resort for boarders to get around in.

Getting to this ski region is relatively easy. Granada airport is one hour away and Malaga is two hours away. If you want a ski holiday that doesn't break the bank, with good transfer times and in beautiful surroundings you should look no further than the Sierra Nevada.
