Easter Ski Holidays
If you want to avoid the nightmare of skiing at half term and don’t want to incur the wrath of your child’s school by taking them out then you should consider skiing at Easter. Easter skiing also comes with the added bonus of warmer weather.
The key is to choose the resorts that will still offer great snow due to their altitude and/or location.
Bookings at the end of March and into April are often quieter, but whilst resorts will love you with some great deals, make sure you get the budget airline tickets booked up as they will go quickly.
Some Great Easter Ski Resorts
So what are the best resorts to look at for Easter skiing?
Zermatt in Switzerland is a great resort at Easter as it has some of the highest peaks in Europe, guaranteeing great snow. Swiss resorts also offer that chocolate box appeal, it really is a very pretty resort and plenty of piste to keep you amused.
Locally there’s 200km of piste but you can also buy a lift pass that allows you to ski over the border in Italy in Cervinia and also consider the International Aosta pass. The only downside as with many Swiss resorts is that it can be pricey. You may also want to check out Saas Fee a stones throw from Zermatt, a lesser known resort but snow sure and very pretty. The top lift station at Saas Fee sits at 3500m so again the snow here is very good. Lots here for children to do and it’s a car free resort!
What About France?
Val Thorens in France at 2300m is also very snowsure. An amazing 99% of its pistes sit above 2000m so the skiing is pretty much assured. The resort is well set up for families at Easter with themed parties and egg hunts around the resort.
With connections to the huge Three Valleys ski area there will definitely be skiing for all levels here with access to 600km of terrain, 150km locally in Val Thorens itself.
Over the Atlantic
If your child’s school is generous with the holidays and you are flush with cash and time, you may want to look at going further afield.
Whistler offers great snow at Easter, with lifts open well into May. For children you will get free ski passes for under 12’s and with egg hunts and face painting on offer this is a good choice for families.
The Whistler ski area is in British Columbia and offers an amazing 4757 acres of runs, split very fairly between beginner, intermediate and expert runs, so something for everyone in your group. In fact Whistler is regarded by many as the world’s greatest ski resort so well worth considering if you have the school holiday provision.
Back to Europe
Closer to home you may also want to check out Les Deux Alps. It may not be as pretty as some of the Swiss resorts mentioned or as huge as Whistler but it does have a lot going for it.
Just a two hour transfer from, Grenoble and you can access 223km of downhill runs, a good spilt between beginner, intermediate and expert runs and with a top altitude of 3568m there is a good snow cover at Easter.
In Summary
This is just a taster of some of the places you can visit during an Easter break. Look for high altitiude resorts or even mid range ones that get huge amounts of snow that will last well into April at all ski levels.
If you have the school holidays why not avoid the madness of half term and get some snow at Easter!
