An Eye on the Snow Forecast

Is it worth keeping your eye on the weather forecasts to see whether there's snow due? From a practical point of view, once you've paid your money it's pretty immaterial - just a nice to know!

With the latest meteorology forecasts accurate enough to predict the amount of snow about to drop in resort, shouldn't we all keep a close eye on what's happening from day to day? Around 1 million people ski or snowboard from the UK every year, yet only a small percentage actually bother to check the conditions before they leave home. Is there a reason for this?

Is it Important to Check the Weather Forecast?

Depending on the time of year, then yes it could be a very useful exercise to quickly check the weather in resort before you fly. This is especially important in times of extreme cold as you may want to pick up some last minute balaclava's or base layers. These will cost a fortune in resort so better to go prepared with the clothing and equipment that you need. Conversely if the weather is warmer you may need items like summer gloves, so check and be prepared!

Is it Essential? Who Should Check?

Going skiing in any resort will require the same basic clothing and equipment. You will always need suncream for example and a ski jacket. The beauty of knowing the weather is that you can ensure you have exactly what you need and make the best choices when you are packing e.g. ski gloves for mild to cold weather, ski mittens for extreme cold.

The best use of weather reports however is for those last minute ski deals or ski weekends. If you are travelling somewhere for a weekend you must have snow, so knowing where the latest snow has fallen, or will do over the period you are there, could make all the difference.
