money

Looking to treat yourself with a trip to the mountains this ski season, but don't think your finances can stretch to it? Follow these top tips to make that ski holiday a reality on even the tightest of budgets.

Transfers to Resort

Although skiing is not traditionally a type of holiday associated with travelling on a budget, if you are willing to make some small compromises, it is certainly a possibility. For example - shave money off your holiday plans by arranging your own transport to and from the resort. If travelling to France perhaps consider renting a car and driving, splitting the cost between your 4 passengers. It may not be as comfortable as flying, but it will definitely be less painful when your credit cards bill arrives at the end of the month.

Accommodation

In terms of accommodation and living costs, these can be significantly reduced by opting for self-catering accommodation - which if shared between a party of four can be found at reasonable prices in even the most well known resorts. Eating out whilst on and off the piste can also be a huge drain on your resources, so if you are prepared to take your own food out with you during the day and cook your meals in the evenings, you can certainly save yourself another large chunk of money.

Why not check out some of these ski resorts that offer great slopes and accommodation at lower than average prices.

Soldeu - Andorra

Andorra has traditionally been the first point of call for anyone looking for budget ski breaks and although since joining the Euro the prices have risen, there are still great value holidays to be had. With its constantly improving north facing slopes offering a selection of runs and reliable snowfall, Soldeu is undoubtedly an acceptable alternative to other European resorts of its size and is perfect for beginners.

Tignes - France

If you MUST go to the Alps, your best bet without stretching the purse strings too far can be found in Tignes. The upside of this option is that you have the slopes of the famous Espace Killy at your disposal, one of the best areas to ski in the world - where you will find a huge array of the very best slopes for skiers of all levels to enjoy.

The downside is that with the popularity of the area come higher prices in just about every area of your stay. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, by staying in a self-catering apartment, preparing your own food and cutting back on any non-essential spending you can enjoy world class slopes without necessarily paying world class prices.

Poiana Brasov - Romania

Situated in the Transylvania region of Romania, Poiana Brasov is a large resort for the region, boasting 11 lifts and 13 pistes which offer an impressive 775 metres of runs for you to enjoy. Compared to resorts in the Alps, accommodation is fairly cheap and the city offers a great selection of après ski activities and a large variety of quality restaurants and nightlife. The only downside to Poiana Brasov is its distance from the nearest airport, which is situated in the Romanian capital Bucharest, roughly 3 hours drive from the resort.
