Ski Chalets in New Zealand
© New Zealand Tourism
New Zealand is truly an amazing place to ski in. The main offering is the chance to ski in a British summer as the New Zealand ski season runs from June to October. The scenery is amazing, there is great apres ski and a great range of activities off piste. Do research your accommodation though as much of it is in nearby towns, New Zealand doesn't offer the traditional 'resorts' that you will be used to from skiing in Europe.
How to Find a Ski Chalet in New Zealand
Resorts in New Zealand can best be divided into three main groups. There are large commercial ski areas, very small resorts run by enthusiasts and finally the New Zealand club fields owned by club members. With the exception of the club fields most of the resorts do not offer on mountain accommodation, so most of it is in local towns. As such you wont find chocolate box style chalets here. In local towns you will find the usual range of accommodation, from hotels to backpacker hostels.
What Other Accommodation Options Are There?
Accommodation in local towns in New Zealand can include everything from luxury hotels, lodges, b&b's and backpacker motels. In Queenstown for example there are 5* hotels alongside backpacker rooms. There are some apartments in Cardrona very close to the slopes so these get booked up very easily. So in summary, in New Zealand you will find all the accommodation options that you would from any town around the world, just don't go looking for a slope side catered chalet-you wont find one!
