holidays in Mount Bachelor, Oregon

Mount Bachelor is located very close to Sunriver, Bend and Sister, Oregon. It is known as one of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest skiing areas. There is every type of terrain possible to ski here, making it a popular ski destination. It is also the highest elevation available to ski in all of Washington and Oregon since it is situated at 9,065 feet.

Where

The Regional Airport in Bend is only 16 miles from Bend and offers direct flights from Seattle, San Francisco and Oregon. From Bend it is about one and a half hours to the mountain. The Sunriver shuttle takes people from the town to the mountain for a small fee if they are lodged in the town. Portland is the nearest international airport at a distance of 150 miles away. If you are driving, the scenery along the Columbia River is impressive.  

On the Slopes

Mount Bachelor provides direct access to a total of 71 individual pistes that are served by 12 ski lifts. The resort is at an elevation above 1500m, making it possible to access the resort by ski or board. With 13 snow cannons, the mountain is augmented with man-made snow. The ski lifts have the capability to take up to 22,000 skiers or boarders up the hill each hour. The terrain is challenging with steep lave chutes, bowls, gullies and glades and may be best suited for intermediate to expert skiers and boarders.  The terrain is twisty and turning like the paths that lava would have taken down the mountain.  There is also a terrain park here where some of the finest boarders come to practice their skills. The lift system is rated as the best in North America with 7 high speed quad chairs. The glade areas open into wide areas for open powder skiing.

Off the Slopes

There are 6 facilities on the mountain at the day lodges to choose to dine at, and several accommodation types in the area near the town. Accommodation options include houses, condos and motels/hotels. Aside from skiing, you may want to take in ice skating, dog sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling or touring the town of Bend and it’s museum. The Bend village has a variety of lively restaurants and pubs and is just 22 miles away.
