What's The Atmosphere Like?

Lets be fair it's not the first place you think of, but increasing numbers of visitors and operators now end up in the land of the rising sun for an unforgettable winter experience. With great powder snow, the mountains cater for all ability levels whether you are a beginner or an expert. The range of steep bowls, tree runs and groomed trails are all here. But what sets Japan aside is the culture, food and traditions which will all make this a very different ski holiday.

Who Will Enjoy It The Most?

Put it this way, ski Japan and you get champagne powder snow. This falls regularly through the season between December and late March thanks to Siberian winds coming over the Sea of Japan and picking up around 8% moisture content. So if 14m of snow in Hokkaido sounds a great idea - you're on. Unfortunately, with Siberian winds comes cold temperatures, with ranges between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius at most resorts.

There are some excellent ski resorts in Japan - we have focussed on the three main resorts to start with - but there are over 50 ski resorts dotted across the mountains of Japan. We also chose the three that we know ski operators have package deals for, making them more accessible.

Staying Here

Ski accommodation is varied in Japan but of course offers the sublimely luxurious through to more basic apartments. There really is something for everyone here so check out the resorts and try something a little different this ski season.

Getting Here

The best thing to do is get a direct flight from the UK into Tokyo. From here you can either get an internal flight or use one of the famously efficient Japanese trains.
