Telluride is a unique and tucked away ski resort located in a box canyon in the Southwest corner of Colorado. What started off as a mining town later became a world class ski resort well known for its powder skiing. With more than 90 ski runs, the resort spans across 2,000 acres. Here you will find two gondolas and 18 ski lifts, as well as hike to terrain. Read our guide for all you need to know.
Where
Approximately six miles from the town, Telluride has an airport to arrive to if the weather permits. Montrose is located 65 miles away and is the destination into which most visitors to Telluride arrive. Several of the major airlines fly into this airport. The Telluride Express, Mountain Limo or the Alpine Luxury Limo can transport visitors from the airport to the resort. From Denver, Telluride is a 35 minute drive on the I -70 West or 125 miles from Durango.

On the Slopes
The face of the mountain is facing the town of Telluride and also goes over onto the other side; this is referred to as the Revelation Bowl. Most of Telluride’s runs are geared towards experts at about 41%. Another 23% of Telluride’s runs are suitable for beginners and another 36% of the runs are ranked as being at an intermediate level. On average, Telluride’s annual snowfall is about 309 inches. The uncrowded lifts at the mountain close at 4:00 pm, while the upper parts of the ski area close at an earlier time to ensure the safety of their skiers. This ski area has been increased in the past years to make it an even more enjoyable experience for both local and international skiers who visit the mountain.

Off the Slopes
The town of Telluride is a mix of both old and new, with the Mountain Village a real state of the art ski village. A gondola links the two parts of the centres together. The streets of the town are lined with several bars and restaurants. You may also want to hit the spa for some special treatments as well during your visit. Accommodation varies from lower budget, to hotels such as the Columbia which offers the best in fine dining. Activities aside from skiing include horse riding, dogsledding, winter fly fishing, snowshoeing, sleigh ride dinners and ice climbing.

Telluride is a million miles away from some of the grey purpose built European resorts. It is an authentic wild west town, Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank here! The only real down side of the resort is that the ski area is quite small.

If it is a chalet you were looking for look out for the rustic lodges and ranches that sit away from Mountain Village. These offer real peace and quiet, away from it all, but you will need to accept the need to travel to the slopes every day.

Accommodation in Telluride is mostly hotels, apartments(or condominiums) as they call them here, rustic lodges, houses and even ranches a little off the beaten track.
One decision you do need to make is where exactly you want to be. If you want bars, coffee shops, restaurants and a bit of nightlife then opt to stay in Telluride town itself. For good ski in ski out accommodation look at Mountain Village and if you want complete seclusion opt for one of the lodges.
Apartments Available Here
Telluride has a number of good apartment choices. The Elk Mountain resort is a member of the 'small luxury hotels of the world' and has good rooms and even three bedroom set ups.
In Mountain Village there is the Peaks Resort & Golden Door Spa which has great ski in ski out convenience. It has good three bedroom cabins and is great for children as it has a water slide, pool and climbing wall. The most modern condos will be found here in Mountain Village.

Telluride offers a good choice of hotels and apartments ranging from luxury through to more budget offerings. You first need to decide if you want to be in the centre of Telluride town itself, in Mountain Village or in a more secluded spot away from it all.
Telluride town is a great choice if you want lots of bars, coffee shops and restaurants. Mountain Village is the place to head for ski in ski out convenience and for seclusion there are a lot of rustic lodges to choose from, although you would need to travel in to the slopes each day.
What Type of Hotels are Available Here?
There are some good luxury hotels in Telluride town including Camels Garden Hotel, the Ice House Lodge and the New Sheridan Hotel. There are also a good number of small boutique style hotels including the River Club Hotel.
In Telluride Mountain Village there is the Cappella Hotel a 5* luxury offering. There is also the Reaks Resort and Golden Door Spa Hotel which is great if you are with children as it has a pool, waterslide and climbing wall. The Lumiere Hotel in Mountain Village is also worth checking out.

Tellurides amazing beauty and peacefulness is also its major stumbling block, it isn't an easy place to get to! But in some way that's the charm of the place. It is located in the San Juan Skyway in southwest Colorado, quite away from any cities.
Flying Here
The nearest International airport is Denver which is 530km away, a seven hours drive. Phoenix is a nine hour drive away and Albuquerque is around five hours away.
To avoid this you could fly into a regional airport like Telluride Regional Airport which is 10km away from the resort. You can fly here from Denver or Phoenix although the airport often closes when the weather is bad.
Another regional airport to consider is Montrose Regional Airport, 105 km away. It takes in more flights from airports around the states including Chicago, Dallas, Salt Lake City and Houston.
