Sitting on a high, sunny plateau in the Maurienne valley sits the resort of St Sorlin. This is a great choice for those of you who want to get away from the more commercialised, better known French resorts.
Where?
St Sorlin is a pretty village in the Maurienne Valley, surrounded by majestic peaks like the 3,500m Aiguilles d'Arves and L'Etendard. It is full of savoyard farmhouses and at its centre is a beautiful seventeenth century baroque church. The resort is approximately 3 hours from Lyon or Turin airports.

On the slopes
St Sorlin is part of the larger Les Sybelles ski area which has 300km of pistes and includes the resorts of St Jean d'Arves,Le Corbier and La Toussuire. This ski area is the fourth largest ski area in France. It is best suited to beginners and intermediates with the nursery slopes right in the centre of the village and nice, wide, cruisy tree lined blue runs.
This is not a great resort for more experienced skiers and boarders but the off piste is very good. Experts who are staying here for longer than a week will need to explore the Les Sybelles ski area. But the pistes are uncrowded and there is rarely a lift queue. This is something of a hidden gem!

Off the slopes
Nightlife is fairly quiet here, the best choice for evening entertainment would be L'Extreme and L'Avalanche but you wouldn't come here for a wild time! Off the pistes there's snowshoeing and sleigh rides. This is a good resort if you are tired of the commercialised, better known French resorts and you want to experience something quieter and full of alpine charm still.
