The ski areas of Valloire and Valmeinier are linked ski areas and occupy three valleys high above the Maurienne valley. Valmeinier is a great option for those of you who want to get away from other Brits and enjoy a quiet family holiday.
Where?
Valmeinier is situated in the Northern Alps of the Savoie region, it is on the Italian border and on the doorstep of the Vanoise National Park. Valmeinier 1500 is an old village made up of 20 hamlets.It saw some building work in 1987 when a new village was built up at 1800m providing some great ski in ski out accommodation. Yet despite this new purpose built part of Valmeinier it still retains its rustic quality and the old and the new blend in well together. Nearest airports are Grenoble and Chambery.

On the slopes
The area offers good skiing for all levels but it is probably intermediates who will love it here the most.Highlights include long cruisy blues which end in amongst the pine forests.The link between Valloire and Valmeinier is via a choice of two lifts-the Inversins detachable chair at the top of the valley and the Amera chair lift which reaches Valmeinier 1500 across a deep gorge. For beginners this resort also allows them to ski green runs which are at peaks like Gros Crey so they can ski at the top of the mountain, something resorts often only allow experts to do. For expert skiers there are some challenging blacks at Le Crey Rond which also gets good powder. But our advice would be to get a guide and explore the really good off piste here.

Off the slopes
Accommodation is varied here but you may want to head up to the new chalets at Valmeinier 1800 as they have been built surrounding the ski station so some great ski in ski out accommodation here. Off piste there is an open air ice rink, snowshoeing, tobogganing, paragliding, ice climbing and also a cinema, bowling alley and a disco..Twice weekly there is also night skiing. But the beauty of Valmeinier is that it has succeeded in keeping alive the authentic ski village atmosphere. Nightlife here isn't wild but there are some good restaurants serving Savoyard specialities and a number of friendly bars. A great choice for families who really want to get away from the more commercialised French ski resorts.
