Kaunertal Glacier

Kaunertal Glacier is as remote and wild as you can get. It is located in a natural park and extends to an amazing 3500m altitude. It is open from October to June so if you fancy uncrowded slopes, no lift queues and skiing and boarding in June check this glacier out!
Where?
The Kaunertal Glacier is located in the Tyrol. Nearest airports are Innsbruck one hour away, Munich two and a half hours away and Zurich three hours away. You can then drive to the slopes either privately or there is a bus. There are two embarkation points-the Ochsenalm car park and the Kaunertal Glacier mid station, where most of the facilities are. The landscape of the area is so beautiful, the drive out to the glacier is no ordinary drive,, it will take your breath away!
On the slopes
As with most glaciers the skiing here is best suited to intermediates. The skiing is mostly wide, cruisy affairs but great for learning on or honing your skills. There is a ski school here with 25 instructors. Freeriders will also love it here and the snowpark is amazing with kicker lines, rail areas and a large super pipe. For those who want more you can always head further down the valley to the resorts of Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis. Children under 10 can access the glacier for free if they are accompanied by an adult and there are good playgrounds here for them.
Off the slopes
There is no accommodation here, most skiers and boarders stay in Feichten. As such there is no apres ski here but you can get a few beers on the sun terrace before you leave! This is not an traditional resort in the true sense of the word but still a wonderful place to ski or board particularly if you want to freeride.
