Buying a snowboard can be an expensive outlay so get it right first time. Read our guide so that you spend wisely. A good starting point is to establish what level of boarder you are or want to be. Budget can also be an important criteria. Also, follow our guide on how to measure up for a board.

What terrain will you be riding?

This is a good starting point. The right snowboard for you is one designed for the terrain you prefer. All mountain boards will perform anywhere on the mountain. They can either be directional or twin tips and are favoured by most boarders. Freestyle boards have twin tips and are for jumps, spins and tricks in the park. Wide boards are extra wide versions of all mountain boards designed for riders with large feet. Split boards are backcountry specific where the board essentially splits in two to resemble skis. Freeride boards are for off piste and backcountry. Powder boards, as the title suggets, are for riders who will spend all their time in deep fluffy snow. There are also women specific boards which tend to have narrower waists and softer flex.

It is important to note that boards are now classified by terrain preferences not by ability level. It is usually recommended however that beginners opt for all mountain boards.

Board shape

Here you need to choose between directional boards and true twins. Directional boards are for riding downhill and are good for riding all over the mountain. True twins can ride forward or backwards so are useful in terrain parks.

Cambers and rockers

Camber snowboards are also known as regular boards and are really for experienced riders who want to go fast. Rocker boards have an upturned nose and tail and are good in powder and when riding rails. They tend to be favoured by more novice riders.

What size of board?

To get the right length stand a board on its tail, its nose should reach somewhere between your nose and your chin. Many boarders want long boards for speed, park riders often favour shorter boards. In terms of sidecut radius, narrower waists are often favoured for beginners. Snowboards have metal edges that provide control and steering, a longer edge provides stability at high speed, a shorter edge is good for turn and spins.
