Snowboarding Pants

A good pair of snowboard pants are pretty essential to ensure you have a comfortable day on the slopes. You will undoubtedly spend some of you time on your bottom and if you get cold and wet then it's game over. Here we help you to understand what to look for when buying a good pair of snowboarding pants.

The first thing to understand is that there are a lot of different designs on the market. The first two things to decide are how much you normally feel the cold and secondly what sort of climate you will be snowboarding in. If for example you tend to get quite hot whilst snowboarding and you will be skiing in a fairly mild climate you may not want to buy the most heavily insulated pants.

There are a number of different types of snowboarding trousers on the market. Here we describe what these types actually mean in laymans English!

Types of Snowboard Pants

The most common type of snowboard trouser is an insulated trouser. This means that the outer layer is waterproof and inside it has an insulated layer usually made of fleece,or down. Then there are what are called shell pants which are the insulated trousers without the insulation! They are highly waterproof but may not keep you warm so it all depends how cold you think you will get. You can also consider buying a shell pant and adding your own base layer.

Then there are different terms that you will see on the label, here we will tell you what these terms mean. Lets start with the term waterproof.

Waterproof

The waterproof rating essentially will tell you just how much water your pants will be able to take before they start letting it in! Waterproof ratings are measured in mm. The higher the rating the more waterproof your pants will be. 20,000 is pretty high but you will find a lot of good snowboard pants that offer anything from between 5,000 to 10,000 mm waterproof rating. Remember though that the higher the rating the most expensive the trousers will be.

Materials that are well known here include Gore-Tex, Hyvent and DryRide.

Breathability

This is all about how a fabric allows sweat to escape. High breathability means that sweat will be released and you will stay dryer and more comfortable. This is measured in grams. The higher the grams the more moisture escapes and the more breathable your pants will be. Very high breathability will be 25,000g, entry level will be around 2,000-3,000g. Again, there is  a link between price and rating.

Fully taped seams

This may not mean much to you but is pretty crucial. Fully taped seams means that all of the stitched seams have been waterproofed, so you are getting a better trouser than those that only offer critically taped seams.

Other Features

Other things we think you may want to consider include boot gaiters, which can keep the snow out. Articulated knees are also a great feature and waist adjusted trousers are also useful.
