Lets start with explaining what some of the terms that you will find on labels actually mean.
Waterproof
How waterproof a fabric is is all about how long it takes for water to permeate through the fabric. This test is rated in mm. Some jackets will offer 5,000 mm, the best performing jackets will offer 20,000 mm. Gore Tex outperforms most on the market and delivers waterproof levels exceeding 20,000 mm. Also check that all seams are taped.
Breathability
If you don't wear a breathable fabric essentially your body moisture will build up inside and you will quickly become wet. Not only is this an uncomfortable feeling but you will also become cold once you stop. Breathability of a fabric is measured by the rate at which water vapour passes through a square meter of fabric over a 24 hour period. The figure is reported in grammes. At the lower end of jackets you will see breathability reported as 5,000g, the best performing will be nearer to 20,000g.
Hoods and Other Features
Hoods can be a great feature when you need to keep warm on ski lifts. Zips under your arm pits can be great if you are getting hot and sweaty. Also check out inner pockets to keep valuable items secure whilst you are riding.
