What size is right for you?

This all depends on where you are going and how long you will be gone for. Pack volume is normally measured in litres and for a normal day tour, you will need a bag that holds 20-35l.

What type of boarding are you doing?

If you are going into the backcountry you will need space for your safety and avalanche gear. It is crucial that this is a separate compartment for your avalanche gear so that you have easy access should an avalanche situation arise. You may also want a snowboard carry system on your backpack so that you have your hands free in the backcountry.

The right fit

Think about all the layers you will be wearing and try the backpack on with your snowboard jacket. Some backpacks come in different lengths. Do check out the straps and waist belts to ensure it fits properly and wont bug you when you are out riding.

Hydration

Some backpacks now come with their own hydration bladders with tubes. The main advantage of these is that you can take in water without having to take your gloves off and fiddle around with getting the lid off a bottle of water.

Other useful features to look for

Back or side access zippers can be useful if you need something at the bottom of your bag. A helmet carry can also be great as can compression straps so you can reduce the bulk of a pack for light days.
