Snowboard Bindings

Below we have a detailed buying guide to snowboard bindings but the two most important questions you need to answer first include your ability level and also the type of snowboarding you are going to be doing. Quality bindings aren't cheap so check out our guide before you buy.

What sort of boarder are you?

A good starting point is to decide what sort of riding you are going to do. You will see the following terms when buying-All Mountain, covers all terrain, Freestyle is best for jumps and tricks in the park, Freeride is for backcountry and off piste, Powder forsoft snow, Splitboards for deep backcountry where your board essentially becomes skis!

What is your ability level?

If you are  a beginner then look for a binding which is soft, forgiving and fairly simple in design. Intermediates should look for slightly more stiff bindings which will give greater response. Advanced riders who want to be fast need to look for features designed to dampen shock and vibration and be more responsive and reactive.

Understanding bindings

It is also good to have a basic understanding of what makes up bindings. There are three main terms it is good to understand. Highback is the word used to describe the vertical plate that rests against your Achilles tendon to allow you to control your rear edge. If you want speed you will want a tall stiff highback. For riding the parks you would want a shorter more flexible highback. Straps, essentially these secure your boot. Always think simple here. Baseplate, this is a padded platform which attaches the plates to a boards bolt pattern or binding interface.

Types of bindings

There are three different types of bindings.

Strap bindings-these are the most popular and prices for these range from low to mid price. Straps secure each boot in place and the highback does not move. The main downside of these bindings is the constant manual buckling and unbuckling that you have to do.

Speed entry bindings-these look very similar to strap bindings but they have a reclining highback that allows you to have easy boot access. A lot of serious riders think this doesn't give you as much control.

Burton EST-these are more expensive and are only suitable with Burtons Channel mounting system.

A good fit

A good fit is where the boot can flex but not wobble. Your boot should feel snug and any straps should not dangle too much.

How much should I pay?

The old adage of you getting what you pay for is very relevant here. If you do spend more money then you are likely to get lighter weight bindings, more adjustment points and well developed padding.
