Snowboards for the backcountry

There are  a number of different boards to choose from here. All mountain boards, as the title suggests, perform anywhere on the mountain from groomed runs to backcountry. All mountain boards can be directional or twin tips. Splitboards are backcountry specific boards which essentially split in half to create two skis to allow climbing on untracked backcountry slopes. You then put the halves back together to ride downhill. If the idea of a splitboard doesn't appeal to you then look at Freeride which are designed for off piste and backcountry terrain. They are stiff boards and give you good stability when riding hardpack. Powder boards are, as the title suggests, very good in deep fluffy snow but also good in backcountry bowls. These offer wide waists and upturned tips and tails.

Backcountry boots

For many riders and skiers your boots will be one of the most important purchases that you make. If you have ever spent the day in the wrong boots you will know how painful this is. Boots will also vary enormously from the lacing system, liners and of course price. For backcountry riding stiffer boots are often preferred. Check out that the boot you are buying will also allow you not only to ride but also to potentially hike, split and climb.

Bindings

Probably one of the most important bits of your kit. It is essential that you get the right bindings for your boot and also your ability and style. A bindings flex is determined by the base plate and the highback. The stiffer the flex the more responsive, the softer the flex the more playful. If you are thinking of doing a little of everything then look for all mountain which will have a medium flex but for the steep and the deep, the challenging terrain of backcountry, opt for a stiffer flex.

Avalanche safety gear

When you decide to snowboard away from patrolled, groomed and avalanche controlled areas you need to accept that you are entering a potentially dangerous world. The least you should have on you is a transceiver, shovel and probe. And don't just get the gear, do get training on how to use it or a better idea is to go out with a guide, certainly if you are new to backcountry boarding.

Accessories

You will need a backpack that is comfortable to wear all day but will carry your safety gear and other provisions like first aid essentials and food supplies. Another good idea is to get hold of a multi tool that is small enough for you to carry but will help you make any technical adjustments that you need to. Polarized sunglasses can also be good for the climbing aspect of backcountry.
