Ski Trousers

Buying a good pair of ski trousers is pretty crucial if you are going to enjoy your day on the slopes. If you get cold or wet then it really is game over. Here we will show you what the market has to offer, from trousers v salopettes, the different terms used and finally, features worth looking out for.

Firstly lets deal with whether you should buy trousers or salopettes. Salopettes are the same as many ski pants in that they are insulated but the big difference is that they come with shoulder straps attached. The main advantage of them is that they give more coverage around the waist area. It is dependent however on what you find more comfortable.

Before you buy any ski trouser it is worth thinking about two things, how hot or cold do you normally get ? And secondly, what is the climate like where you are going skiing? For example, if you plan to ski late in the season where the weather is warmer you may not need such a warm trouser.

Different Types of Ski Trousers

There are a number of different type of ski pants available. These include 3 in 1 ski pants. These are waterproof ski pants that have a base layer built in. You can detach the base layer as required. The most common trouser is the insulated ski trouser. These have a waterproof layer and a a built in insulated layer made of fleece, down or synthetic. Shell trousers are just that, they provide you with a waterproof trouser but no insulation. Soft shell trousers are for warm climates and stretch ski pants are really for those fashionistas who want a snug fit to show off the body, they offer usually poor levels of insulation.

When buying your ski trousers it helps to understand what you are spending your money on and how important it is. Here are some terms you may find on the label.

Waterproof

How waterproof an item is depends on how quickly the fabric absorbs water placed on it in tests. The rating is normally stated in mm from 0 mm to 45,000 mm. Quite simply, the higher the figure the more waterproof an item is. So do check this figure out. Also, look out for whether all the seams are taped as this can make a big difference. In a nutshell, if all the tapes are seamed you have a higher quality ski trouser.

Breathable

If your ski trousers aren't breathable the result will be moisture build up inside your trousers. Not only does that not feel pleasant but it will also cool you down when you stop. So check out what the label says about breathability. In addition to this we would recommend that you wear a moisture wicking thermal base layer which will also work to keep moisture away from your skin.

Fitting

Ensure you do get the right fitting for your trouser, If they are too tight then it will affect your ability to move properly but if they are too loose then they will let cold air in.

Features

In addition when looking for trousers consider how many pockets the trousers have. In our view you can never have too many. Do they have an adjustable waist? Ankle zips can keep the cold out and finally look for good ventilation.
