Ski Gloves
It is pretty essential when you are skiing to ensure that your hands are warm and dry. Wet hands will simply mean your day is over. Here we help to show you what to look out for when buying a good pair of skiing gloves.
The first question is whether to buy ski gloves or ski mittens. Some of this will come down to personal preference, some skiers feel they have more movement control in gloves. However mittens do keep your hands warmer, so if you are skiing in cold temperatures do bear this in mind.

When buying gloves you will see the following terms, so what do they all mean? Lets start with the term waterproof, we all think we know what it means but do we?
Waterproof
The waterproof rating given to gloves will tell you how good the fabric is at keeping water out. This is measured in mm and quite simply the higher the mm rating the more waterproof they are. The best waterproof fabrics to look out for are brands like Gore-Tex, Entrant and Omni-tech. Our advice would be to buy a high waterproof rating, wet hands are no fun and will end your enjoyment.
Breathability
The breathability of a fabric is how good it is in allowing sweat to escape. This ensures that your hands stay dry and warm. This is measured in grams(g). Again the higher the g rating the more breathable the fabric is.
Insulation
How well insulated your gloves are will determine how warm they will keep your hands. Don't be fooled though, thick gloves aren't necessarily the warmest. Many developments now mean that thin gloves can come with a high level of insulation. These new thinner style gloves can give your hand more movement which can make them more effective.
Lining
The lining given to a glove adds insulation and comfort. Look out for gloves where you have detachable linings, this can mean you can adjust them if you get hot.
Fit
Getting the right fit is pretty crucial, if your glove is too small your movements will be restricted, if it is too big it could let in the cold. The way to determine if your gloves fit is to allow a little room at the end of your fingers(about a quarter of an inch).
Cuff Length
You can choose from long or short cuff length. Longer cuffs go over your jacket sleeve, shorter ones sit under your jacket sleeve. If you are skiing in deep powder opt for longer cuffs but sometimes it is down to what your feel is more comfortable.
Mittens v Gloves
Mittens will keep your hands warmer but some riders don't feel as in control. Again, all down to personal preference.
