Padded backpanel and shoulder strap
Put simply padded backpanels and shoulder straps enable you to carry what you need comfortably without adding strain to your back or shoulders. A back protector is also integrated into some backpacks effectively protecting your back from injury.
Compartments
Look for separate internal compartments for any electronic equipment you may have. Some backpacks also come with a fleece lined pocket to keep your goggles in.
Waterproof
Sounds obvious but do ensure your backpack is waterproof and has a waterproof bottom.
Hydration compartment
Taking a bottle of water with you is fine but having to stop, take your gloves off, get the bottle out of your backpack isn't always very practical. A good solution to this is looking for a rucksack that has a hydration pack included in it. Essentially this means that your rucksack contains a reservoir that has a drinking tube coming out of it, allowing you to drink out of the tube as you ski.
Female specific backpacks
Well worth considering as the backpack will be a very different shape and hence more comfortable. The female specific bags are made to fit the female shape with a shortened back and wrist and chest and shoulder straps which adapt and mould to the female body.
Other useful features
Check out if your rucksack has helmet loops, really useful for that walk home at the end of your day on the slopes. If you are going off piste it may also be good to look for a rucksack that has external side pockets for a probe and shovel. Some backpacks will also include a ski fastener, again important if you are also climbing and hiking. Some rucksacks also provide a poles carrier. Sealed zips keep moisture out and contents dry.
