Lets start with the top of your body. 30-40% of all ski injuries affect your upper body so how can you best protect your chest, back and shoulders?

Upper body protection

First of all you need to choose between hard and soft shell body armour. Choose hard shell if you are racing or skiing very aggressively. Soft shell armour is by definition more flexible and lightweight and is good if you are a recreational skier or you have had injuries before and want to protect yourself as a result. What sort of upper body protection should you now be looking for? You can choose from jackets, vests and spine protectors. A spine protector is a good choice if your major concern is a spine injury. A vest will protect your chest, ribs and back whilst the full body armour with sleeves will provide maximum coverage for your upper body.

Lower body protection

Included here is wristguards, kneepads, impact shorts, crash pants, the list is endless. What you choose will depend on your medical history ie if you want to further protect a part of your body that has been hurt before.Wrist guards tend to be worn mostly by snowboarders but if you have damaged your wrists before skiing then they could give you extra protection. Board/bum/crash shorts can also give great protection to your coccyx and buttocks. Knee and elbow pads are also becoming more popular with skiers.
