Here are some tips to buying a ski helmet, lets start with measuring your head.

Finding your helmet size

Most helmets are sized in centimetres based on the circumference of your head. To get this measurement accurate measure around your head with a tape measure, just above your eyebrows.

What does a good fit feel like?

A well fitting helmet should feel snug but not painfully tight. One main thing to check is that it doesn't roll off backwards when you are wearing it.

Try your goggles on with the helmet

Always try your helmet on with your goggles, you may need to adjust your goggles but the helmet and goggles should feel snug without you feeling uncomfortable. If you are buying online make sure you are able to return the helmet. Look for a helmet that has goggle clips to help secure your goggles in place.

Helmet ventilation

How much ventilation you need will depend on the conditions you are skiing in or you may know that you do get hot and sweaty when you ski so ventilation is very important. Some helmets do come with adjustable vents.

Adjustable fit settings

This can be very useful in children's helmets so that the helmet can be adapted to fit their growing heads.

Safety

Look out for the certification on your helmet. The European ski helmet standard is CEN, a second system is the American Society of Testing and Materials(ASTM). No helmet is ever going to offer you 100% guarantee should you have an accident but these certifications will at least assure you that all the right safety checks are in place.

Materials

You may see the material Expanded PolyStyrene(EPS), very common in most ski helmets. It is designed to absorb impact and to protect against one hard impact. Expanded PolyPropylene, EPP, is a multi impact foam, it will therefore return to shape after impact.
