Base Layers and Thermals

A base layer is essentially the clothing that sits next to your skin. A good base layer will keep moisture off your skin and therefore keep you warm and comfortable. This is completely different to a cotton t shirt, which will hold moisture. Before you buy a base layer think about what type of skiing you will be doing and in what type of climate. A lightweight base layer may be fine for a warmer ski area, a heavier weight base layer would be required for a -20 degree skiing environment.

You will also need to choose between synthetic and wool base layers, so what's the difference? Synthetic base layers are essentially lightweight, dry very quickly, are cheaper yet durable and very easy to look after. If you want a really warm base layer then opt for merino wool. They are really warm and very comfortable to wear.

Fleeces

Fleeces are worn over your base layer and essentially are often referred to as the midlayer. Often seen as more of a fashion accessory they can be an essential piece of kit. There are a number of things to look out for. Wind resistance can be a plus as can under arm ventilation. Pockets are also crucial particularly those that have zips, great for stashing away valuables like keys whilst you are out on the slopes. Some fleeces also come with anti microbial treatment that stop bacteria from building up.

Socks

Don't think you can ski in just  a pair of thick normal socks. Ski socks are long, made from wool or synthetic fibre and moisture wicking properties. Medium weight ski socks should be fine for most skiing conditions. Do check out gender specific socks as they are designed to fit means and womens legs and feet e.g. womens socks allow for higher arches and taller calves. Breathability is a must in your ski sock so that your feet stay dry. You will find socks on the market made from a variety of different materials including polyester, nylon, acrylic and wool.
