Ski Bindings

Most of us concentrate on the skis we buy with little thought to the bindings. But bindings are crucial to good skiing, get it wrong and your ejection will either happen too early or not at all. We look at what you should consider when buying ski bindings.

Essentially your bindings are the crucial link between your body and how your skis react. There are a number of things to consider when purchasing ski bindings. We consider the main ones including retention and release, brake width, binding weight and durability.

Retention and Release

The ski bindings are there to hold your ski boot to your skis and then release quickly  in an accident where it would be unsafe for you to still be attached to your skis. Each binding will have what is called a DIN setting(the Deutsches Institut fir Normung) that oversees the ski boot release standard. What your DIN setting is is dependent upon your weight, height and ability as a skier. To put it crudely, if you are a racer or are performing big jumps you will want a high DIN setting as you wont want your boots released that easily. But for most of us, who are recreational skiers, the DIN range will be 4-10.

Brake Width

Bindings come with breaks which prevent skis sliding away. Make sure you buy bindings with breaks wide enough for the waist width of the skis you are mounting them on. Many bindings will come with  a range of brakes for you to choose from.

Binding Weight

You will find that bindings which are lighter do generally cost more. A heaver binding will still work well but we guess it all depends how much you want to pay.

Durability

Most bindings are made from metal or plastic. The plastic used is able to withstand impact but the more metal the more durable binding.
