Gloves and Mittens

Ski gloves aren't just important to keep your hands warm, they also act as a protection for your hands should you have an accident. Mittens will keep your hands warmer but many skiers struggle to get the right grip in them. When buying gloves or mittens look for those that are waterproof, insulated and durable-many cheap brands can rip easily. Also look for safety leashes so if you do need to take them off you wont lose them. If you do get hot on the slopes look out for gloves that have detachable linings. And finally, some will even come with a lens cleaner and nose wipe!

Balaclavas and Bandanas

Keeping your face ,neck and ears warm and dry can be the difference between staying out for the day in extremely cold weather or having to give up and head indoors. In addition many of these products will also stop the snow from going down inside your jacket. When buying products in this category look out for products that are breathable, windproof and moisture wicking.

Goggles

Goggles will protect you from ice, snow and wind which can really damage your eyes. When buying goggles there are a number of things to consider. One is to look for goggles that either have interchangeable lenses to suit different climates and conditions or goggles that will adapt themselves. Also check that your goggles are compatible with your helmet, that the nosepiece is right for you, that you have side covers which prevents wind from entering your eyes and finally that your goggles are well vented. This is not an exhaustible list, but a good starting point for things to consider.

Helmets

Not really an accessory, more a vital piece of safety kit, but whether you are for or against them there are some key things to consider when purchasing a helmet. Most helmets are now made by a polycarbonate material which is strong but not too heavy to wear. The interior should then have double density polystyrene for further protection. If you want comfort also check out extra padding around the chin strap and the ears. If you get hot when skiing or snowboarding also check out the ventilation on the helmet. Some helmets even have integrated headphones or hat accessories like pompoms stitched on!
