waxing your skisWhen it comes to waxing your skis many avid skiers often just shell out money without thinking that there must be a way to handle the task on your own, especially if you are a frequent skier throughout the winter season.

The good news for you if you fall into this category, is that waxing your skis can actually be quite simple, and something that you can do at home if you are willing to spend some time on the task and have a good eye for detail.  Waxing your skis does not have to be a hard task, and can actually be enjoyable once you get familiar with the process, in the same way that waxing a car can be enjoyable for an avid car enthusiast.

What's First When Waxing?

The first thing you will need to do when it comes to waxing your skis is find a proper work area that you do not have to worry about damaging such as a shed or the garage.  This is due to the fact that before you begin you will need to wash the dirt off your skis and also because hot wax can drip a little, which will ruin carpet and some other types of flooring.

After finding an area to work, you should place your skis on sawhorses or a couple of sturdy cardboard box’s so that you have a stand to work with.  Once you do this make sure to place some newspaper along the floor to ease your cleanup later, if you happen to drip some wax by mistake.

Adding the Wax

Once you get setup you will need to plug in an iron and heat it to medium so that you can place the wax block right up against the iron and start to melt it.  Do not turn the iron up to high even if you want to melt the wax quickly, because you will burn it instead.  Ideally you should melt the wax enough so that it drips onto the skis without burning it.

When the wax starts to drip you should allow it to drip along the skis dropping about two drops of the wax per every inch.  Let it cool on your skis and then place the iron on the skis so that the wax melts down into a thin, even coat that can sit on the ski base.  After the wax dries scrape away the excess and brush the bottom of your skis off and you now have waxed skis.
