It’s official, the cheapest ski resort for families is Kranjska Gora in Slovenia. In the latest research it has beaten 15 other resorts to the top spot.

The research is conducted by the Post Office Travel Annual Money Family Ski report. Since Brexit local prices in Kranjska Gora have fallen by five per cent. The report looked at the cost of things like 6 days equipment hire, lift passes and lessons and also lunch on the mountain for a family of four. Family Ski Report 2016 Post Office Travel Money

The total cost in Kranjska Gora was £1017, closely followed by Bansko in Bulgaria. In fact what differentiated the two resorts was the cost of ski lessons which were significantly cheaper in Slovenia, in fact £200 cheaper. Whils’t France remains a favourite with British holidaymakers you can expect to pay between 33% and 39% more in a French ski resort than a year ago. Morzine, an old family favourite, was the best ranked French ski resort in 10th position, although down from 6th a year ago. While Switzerland remains the most expensive country to ski in.

However it is worth noting from the table that there isn’t much between many resorts, other than  a few hundred pounds. Italy does well with both Livigno ranked third and Sestriere ranked fourth. In the latter prices have dropped by 12% due to the lowering of prices for lift passes and tuition. This decision has seen an increase in families from the UK booking there, so maybe a good lesson for other ski resorts to consider.

When looking at where to book for a low cost ski holiday our message however is to do the maths. You may be a family of four but you may not want ski lessons which was included in the above table. You also may be content not to eat in a mountain restaurant but to carry a small picnic on you.

Our advice would be to use the above research to start your research but work out exactly what you want from your ski holiday and then do the comparisons. But on a positive note, whils’t Switzerland still remains an expensive choice, a good ski holiday needn’t break the bank.
