Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is a good starting point for your ski holiday in Bulgaria. But it doesn't tend to get the same attention as say Prague or Istanbul, so is it worth visiting before you hit those slopes?

What's in Sofia?

Sofia is Bulgarias largest city and is located at a real strategic cross roads. The route from western Europe to Istanbul passes through Sofia, it also connects the near east and middle east. Sofia has been settled for many millennia and today you can see monuments to its past. So if history is your thing then check out the church of St George a relic from the days of the Roman Empire. It dates from the 4th century. Other churches with incredible histories include Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Hagia Sophia Church.

If art is your thing then check out the National Art Gallery set in a former royal palace and containing over 50,000 works of art.

Accessing the Slopes

But you are after all here for the great value skiing and boarding, so how best to get from Sofia to the slopes?

Road

Car hire is pretty easy at Sofia airport and you can drive yourself to the resort or use one of the many private transfer companies operating out of the airport. If you are driving yourself then, if you are heading to Borovets, it lies just 70km from the airport and you simply follow the route 82 all the way. The journey should take just one hour. If you are heading to Bansko then the journey should take about two hours and again is quite a straightforward drive.

If you do opt to use a private transfer company then do pre book online before you leave home as it does work out cheaper.

Rail

There are buses and various trains that you can get from Sophia to the resorts but they often involve a number of changes which isn't always easy with ski equipment in tow. For example if you are trying to get from Sophia to Borovets you will need to get a bus to Samokov and then a minibus from there to Borovets. You can get a bus from Sophia to Bansko but the journey by bus is about 2.5 hours. Looking at these transfer times you would do well to use a taxi or private transfer company.
