Where and how do you board?
A good place to start is to determine what type of boarding you will be doing as you have two basic constructions to choose from, hard and soft shell. Hard shell body armour provides a high level of protection for your chest, spine, shoulders and elbows. This can be a great idea of you are doing lots of tricks and jumps in the park. Soft shell armour uses foam padding, this is better if you are riding the slopes and want a little more protection as opposed to full impact protection.
What design should you choose?
You can choose from a wide range of designs including long sleeve jackets, vests and spine protectors. What you choose is really about deciding what part of the body you are most concerned about. If you want full upper body coverage then go for body armour with sleeves. If your chest, ribs and back is the main concern then look for a vest. If your main concern is your back then check out the spine protectors.
Wrist guards
The most common snowboarding injury is wrist fractures, in fact 40% of all injuries are to the wrist. They are relatively inexpensive and fit nicely under your gloves. You can even buy gloves that have wrist guards fitted into them. If you are buying them as separate items look out for adjustable straps, plastic or metal splints on the palm/back of the hand and make sure they are slim enough to allow your gloves to fit over the top.
Knee pads
Snowboard knee pads fit under your snowboard pants and protect your knees if you fall and if you have ever fallen on hard ice or snow you will know that knee injuries can take weeks to heal. They can be particularly important if you are jumping and playing in the park.
Padded shorts
A good pair of padded shorts will certainly protect your tailbone should you fall. They can also protect your hips, your bum from getting sore and will provide extra insulation
