Types of different snowboard helmets

Helmets come in three main categories. Half shell helmets are the most popular type of helmet. They have a hard shell but with soft ear flaps. Full shell helmets have a hard shell over the ears too, these tend to be more for racers. And finally there are full face helmets which include an integrated chin guard and visor, these are only really for the snowboader who is going to do the most extreme snowboarding.

Certification

Look for ASTM which all helmets sold in the USA have to have. This type of helmet is certified to protect the wearer against a single impact. CE EN is for helmets sold in Europe. Again they are designed to protect the wearer from a single impact. The advice is that you should then discard the helmet after one serious impact.

Custom fit adjustments

These helmets can be great as the fit can be even better as you can adjust by using a knob or sliding cinch. But to ensure that the helmet you buy fits properly measure you head with a flexible measuring tape. the tape should sit above your ears and roughly two fingers width above your eyebrows. The helmet should feel snug on your head. Do remember to ensure that you also have your goggles on with your chosen helmet.

Ventilation

This is clearly a personal choice depending on the weather conditions and how hot you get. If this is an issue for you do check out the ventilation which in helmets can be fixed or you can buy helmets that allow you to adjust the ventilation.

Audio features

If listening to music or taking phone calls is your thing check out the helmet you like has bluetooth capabilities.
